LEADER KICKS AGAINST "JAPA" SYNDROME, COUNSELS YOUNGSTERS TO AQUIRE RELEVANT SKILLS.
In recent times, the term "Japa" has become a buzzword among Nigerian youth, symbolizing the overwhelming desire to relocate abroad in search of greener pastures.
However, at a recent youth confab organised by the Old Agege Deeper Life Campus Fellowship in Magodo, Lagos, State Nigeria, Dr. Tope-Phillips Aikhuemelo, a seasoned consultant and former Human Resource Director, urged young Nigerians to have a rethink while having a better mindset.
“Instead of looking outward, he counseled them to focus on developing skills that will keep them relevant in today’s competitive job market.
A CALL FOR REFLECTION
Dr. Tope’s message was clear and punchy, emphasizing how many Nigerians living abroad are longing to return home. “A lot of Nigerians overseas want to come back, because most of them are not comfortable doing the type of work they do over there here,” he explained.
This ideology challenges the idea that opportunities are better outside Nigeria. With the rise of remote work, Dr. Tope elucidated that the skills needed to thrive are increasingly accessible, regardless of location.
"All you need to do is brace up and have relevant skill sets that are aligned with the labor market," he stated, highlighting that the world has become a global village where talent can be sourced from anywhere.
THE POWER OF SKILL ACQUISITION
Speaking further, Dr. Tope shared valuable insights from his experience at Melos Consult, where he trains and sources talent.
He noted a concerning trend where many interns lack fundamental skills, such as proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to craft compelling CVs.
He therefore urged attendees to embrace technology, particularly tools like artificial intelligence, while stressing the fact of not becoming overly dependent on them.
BUILDING EXPERIENCE THROUGH PRO BONO WORK
Dr. Tope also encouraged the young and aspiring attendees to engage in pro bono work, which can help build their CVs and expand their networks.
“This proactive approach not only enhances employability but also fosters a sense of community and contribution.
When you show the capacity to do something without collecting money, you gain experience and make a positive impact," he said.
The Human Resource Director also provided practical advice on crafting compelling CVs.
“Many shortchange themselves by not highlighting their achievements,” he cautioned, urging youths to focus on their skills and accomplishments instead of the traditional style of detailing physical or geographical location over relevant acquired skill sets.
A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO SUCCESS
The campus confab featured other notable speakers, including Mr. Azinmagba Denagan, an education officer with the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission.
Mr. Azinmagba emphasized the importance of prayer, data, and networking as fundamental investments in one’s career.
“To go far in life, you need to invest in prayer,” he advised, reminding attendees that a solid foundation in faith and meaningful collaboration can significantly enhance their prospects.
He also stressed the significance of balancing mental and physical health while navigating career paths.
“Expect congratulations, but don’t be carried away with success,” he cautioned, highlighting the need for self-motivation and consistency.
SPIRITUAL RECALIBRATION
Pastor Samuel Alalade, Co-Founder of Rise Afresh Global Initiative NGO for the Youth, concluded the event with a soul lifting sermon about finding one’s identity for a higher purpose.
He encouraged the youth to reconnect with their Maker, affirming that- “with gifts and talents alone, life can still be miserable.”
His call for introspection and spiritual recalibration resonated deeply with attendees, reminding them of the importance of grounding their ambitions in faith and purpose.
Pastor Alalade concluded by enlightening the audience on what it takes to be recalibrated.
"You need to rethink, readjust, renew, reposition yourself for the future, reset, realign, reschedule, refresh your faith, rest, recharge your relationship and rule your world" he said.
A NEW NARRATIVE
The theme of the program, "Recalibration," was designed to inspire young professionals to realign their priorities and stay relevant in all areas of life.
As participants engaged in interactive sessions, worship, and enjoyed a sumptuous meal, the atmosphere buzzed with renewed energy and determination to passionately pursue purpose with a clearer perspective.
The event concluded after benediction, leaving attendees equipped to become better versions of themselves in a world where the allure of relocating often overshadows local opportunities.
In sum, the conversation was impactful and enriching, while serving as a vital reminder that skills and determination to succeed can be cultivated right at home.
As Nigerian youths continue to navigate their future, embracing the potential within their own country may very well be the key to unlocking a brighter tomorrow.
